NAPLAN & Scholarship Preparation

Targeted writing practice for NAPLAN and independent school scholarship exams, with feedback on every attempt.

Primary student working on a NAPLAN-style writing task

About this program

NAPLAN and scholarship exams test specific writing skills under time pressure. Strong general writers often underperform because they have not practised the exact text types, structures, and timing the exams require.

This program focuses on the writing tasks students will face: persuasive and narrative responses, written under timed conditions, marked against the official criteria, with detailed feedback on every attempt.

Students leave each session knowing exactly what to do differently next time.

Course details

Who it's for

Students in Years 3–6 preparing for the Year 3 or Year 5 NAPLAN writing assessment, or sitting independent school scholarship exams.

How we run it

  • Small groups capped at 7 students.
  • Weekly 90-minute classes at our Thornleigh centre or live online.
  • Mock writing task in every class, marked to NAPLAN criteria.
  • Personalised, written feedback on every piece.

What students cover

  • Persuasive writing: structure, argument, evidence, tone.
  • Narrative writing: orientation, complication, resolution, voice.
  • Sentence variety, vocabulary, punctuation accuracy.
  • Planning under timed conditions and reviewing answers.

Outcomes

Students walk in confident about exactly what markers are looking for, how to plan a strong response in five minutes, and how to write it cleanly within the time limit.

Focus areas

Sentence complexity

Students learn advanced sentence structures and techniques that elevate their writing and score higher on complexity criteria.

Exam strategy

We train students to approach the exam methodically: reading prompts carefully, planning their response before writing, and managing their time under pressure.

Grammar & mechanics

Targeted instruction on grammar, punctuation, and spelling: the building blocks that underpin every aspect of the NAPLAN writing assessment.

Text type analysis

Students analyse model texts to understand what examiners look for, then apply those insights directly to their own timed writing responses.

Writing structure

Clear, logical structure is the foundation of a high-scoring response. Students learn a reliable framework they can execute confidently under exam conditions.

Vocabulary development

An extensive, precisely chosen vocabulary helps students express ideas with impact and stand out from responses that rely on everyday language.

Frequently asked questions

Every session follows our five-step method: Teach, Model, Write, Feedback, Improve. The instructor introduces a skill, shows it in action, students write independently, then receive specific feedback — all within the same session.

Every class is capped at 7 students. This limit exists so every child gets genuine, personalised attention from the instructor each week.

Yes. Every class is led by a qualified teacher — not a casual tutor. Our instructors hold teaching qualifications equivalent to those required by the NSW Department of Education.

A senior instructor sits with your child for a structured writing task, then walks you through the results — strengths, areas to develop, and the right program fit. Around 45 minutes, zero obligation.
